Not all teeth are shaped alike. Each type has a different job, and knowing the differences helps you understand your child's smile as it grows.

The four types of teeth

  • Incisors: the eight flat front teeth that cut food.

  • Canines: the four pointed teeth next to the incisors that tear food.

  • Premolars (bicuspids): eight teeth behind the canines that crush and tear. They are found only in the permanent set.

  • Molars: the large back teeth that grind food.

Baby teeth versus permanent teeth

Children have 20 baby teeth: 8 incisors, 4 canines and 8 molars. Adults have up to 32 permanent teeth: 8 incisors, 4 canines, 8 premolars and 12 molars, including the wisdom teeth. Baby molars are replaced by premolars, and the permanent molars come in behind them.

Why every tooth matters

Baby teeth guide permanent teeth into position and help children chew and speak clearly, so keeping them healthy matters even though they are temporary. Regular checkups let us watch each tooth type come in and catch problems early.
