Dental Sealants for Children in Westwood

Sealants are thin protective coatings that seal the deep grooves of the back teeth, where brushing can't always reach and cavities often begin. Applying them is quick, comfortable and doesn't involve drilling or numbing.

How sealants work

The chewing surfaces of molars have pits and grooves that trap food and bacteria. A sealant fills those grooves with a smooth, hard barrier so decay has a harder time starting.

Which teeth get sealants?

Sealants are most often placed on permanent molars and premolars, soon after they come in. First molars arrive around age 6 and second molars around age 12, so those are common times to place them. Baby molars can be sealed too if your child is at higher risk of cavities.

How long do sealants last?

Sealants can last for several years. We check them at your child's regular visits and repair or replace them if they wear down.

Do sealants replace brushing and fluoride?

No. Sealants protect the chewing surfaces only. Your child still needs daily brushing, flossing and regular checkups, and may also benefit from fluoride.

What to expect

  • We clean and dry the tooth.
  • We apply a mild solution that helps the sealant bond.
  • We paint the sealant on and harden it with a special light.
  • We check the bite. Your child can eat right away.
